Final Exam Grade Needed: Plan the Score That Gets You to Your Target cover image

Weeks before a final, the practical question is simple: what mark do I actually need? If your course splits marks between work done and one big exam, a short weighted calculation answers it. This guide walks through the formula and links to a calculator that handles the arithmetic.

Explanation

Treat the course as two buckets. Everything counted so far fills one bucket; the final fills the other. Each bucket's size matches its percentage of the total grade. Your current course percentage only applies to the completed portion—you multiply it by that portion's weight to get points already banked. Subtract those points from your target overall percentage. Whatever remains must come from the final, spread across the final's weight. Divide to convert back to a percentage on the final itself.

Formula
Points from work so far = current grade × (100 − final weight) / 100
Required final exam score = (target grade − points from work so far) / (final weight / 100)
Example

You have 78% on work that counts for 60% of the module, and the final is worth 40%. Points banked: 78 × 0.60 = 46.8. To reach 80% overall you need 80 − 46.8 = 33.2 more points from the final. Because the final carries 40% of the grade, 33.2 ÷ 0.40 = 83%. Aim for at least 83% on the final. If the tool reports above 100%, that target is not achievable with one exam.

How to use the related calculator

Open the Final Exam Grade Needed calculator. Enter your current course percentage, the final's weight as a percent of the total (for example 35 for a 35% final), and your target overall grade. Read the required final score in the result lines. If the answer is 0% or negative, you have already secured the target. If it exceeds 100%, try a lower target or double-check the weights on your syllabus.

FAQ
What counts as my current grade?

Use the percentage your school reports for all graded work that is already in the gradebook before the final. Do not include the final itself.

My final is worth points, not a percentage—can I still use this?

Convert the final's share to a percentage of the total course points first. For example, a 200-point final in a 500-point course is 40%.

What if I also have a midterm still to come?

This tool assumes only two blocks: work counted so far and the final. If another weighted assessment is pending, combine it with your current work or use a weighted grade calculator for multiple components.
