How it works

Our Percentage Difference Calculator helps you find the relative difference between two values. It's super useful for comparing two numbers and seeing how much they vary from each other, expressed as a percentage of their average.

The Formula
Percentage Difference = (|Value 1 - Value 2| / ((Value 1 + Value 2) / 2)) × 100%

Worked Example
  1. Comparing Sales Figures

    Imagine your shop sold 150 items last month and 180 items this month. To find the percentage difference: Value 1 = 150 Value 2 = 180 Absolute Difference = |150 - 180| = 30 Average = (150 + 180) / 2 = 330 / 2 = 165 Percentage Difference = (30 / 165) × 100% ≈ 18.18% This means sales differed by about 18.18% between the two months.

Tips, Assumptions & Limitations
  • The percentage difference is symmetrical: the difference between A and B is the same as between B and A.
  • This calculation is often used in science and statistics to show the magnitude of difference between two measurements.
  • Ensure your values are in the same units before comparing them.
FAQ

Percentage difference is a way to express the relative difference between two numbers as a percentage. It's calculated by dividing the absolute difference between the two values by their average, then multiplying by 100.

Percentage change (or percentage increase/decrease) usually compares a 'new' value to an 'old' value, using the 'old' value as the base. Percentage difference, however, compares two values symmetrically, using their average as the base, making it suitable for comparing any two values without designating one as 'original'.

Use this calculator when you want to compare two values and see their relative variation, especially when neither value is clearly a 'start' or 'end' point. It's common in scientific experiments, data analysis, and comparing two similar measurements.
