How it works

Use this calculator to estimate your body fat percentage based on your body measurements. It applies the widely recognized US Navy body fat formula, providing a quick way to gauge your body composition. Remember, results are estimates for general informational purposes only and are not medical advice.

The Formula
For Men: Body Fat % = 86.010 * log10(waist - neck) - 70.041 * log10(height) + 36.76
For Women: Body Fat % = 163.205 * log10(waist + hip - neck) - 97.684 * log10(height) - 78.387 All measurements must be in inches for the formula.

Worked Example
  1. Example: Calculating Body Fat for a Man

A man with a height of 70 inches (5'10"), a neck circumference of 15 inches, and a waist circumference of 34 inches would input these values. The calculator would then apply the formula for men: 86.010 * log10(34 - 15) - 70.041 * log10(70) + 36.76, yielding an estimated body fat percentage of about 15.5%.

Tips, Assumptions & Limitations
  • For accurate measurements, use a flexible tape measure and measure directly against your skin.
  • Measure your neck just below the larynx, waist at the navel (for men) or narrowest point (for women), and hips at the widest point (for women).
  • Take measurements multiple times and use the average for better consistency.
  • This calculator provides an estimate; professional body composition tests offer more precise results.
  • Results are for general informational purposes only and are not medical advice. Consult a healthcare professional for personalized health guidance.
FAQ

Body fat percentage is the total mass of fat divided by total body mass, multiplied by 100. It's a key indicator of fitness, as it reflects your body's composition rather than just weight.

The US Navy method is a widely used and generally reliable estimation, but it's not perfectly accurate for everyone. Factors like individual body shape, muscle mass, and measurement technique can influence the results. It provides a good estimate for tracking changes over time rather than a precise clinical measurement.

Healthy body fat ranges vary by age and gender. Generally, for men, 10-20% is considered healthy, and for women, 20-30% is often seen as healthy. Athletes typically have lower percentages. It's best to consult a healthcare professional for personalized advice on healthy ranges.

The US Navy formula for women includes hip circumference because women naturally store more fat in the hip and thigh areas compared to men. This measurement helps to account for these physiological differences in body composition.
