Future Value = Initial Amount × (1 + Inflation Rate)^Years
Imagine you had £500 in 2005. If the average annual inflation rate has been 2.5%, what would that £500 be worth in terms of purchasing power in 2023? Years = 2023 - 2005 = 18 years. Inflation Rate = 2.5% = 0.025. Future Value = £500 × (1 + 0.025)^18 = £500 × (1.025)^18 ≈ £500 × 1.5596 ≈ £779.80. So, to buy what £500 bought in 2005, you'd need approximately £779.80 in 2023.
Inflation is the rate at which the general level of prices for goods and services is rising, and subsequently, the purchasing power of currency is falling. It means your money buys less over time.
This calculator uses a simple compound interest formula, but in reverse for purchasing power. It takes your initial amount, the number of years, and an average annual inflation rate to estimate what that initial amount would be worth in a future year to maintain the same purchasing power.
Official government statistics agencies, like the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) in the US or the Office for National Statistics (ONS) in the UK, provide historical inflation data. Financial news sites often summarize this data.
